Boston, Massachusetts (16 November 2016)- Research firm Cignal AI released market share analysis from its 3rd quarter 2016 (3Q16) Optical Hardware report. The report summarizes optical equipment revenue results for the third quarter and precedes a full release of the report with forecasts.
Cignal AI saw global spending on optical network equipment (SONET/SDH, WDM, and Submarine LTE) grow 10% year over year, with all global regions showing increases in varying degrees.
“The spectacular growth of 100G coherent WDM network deployment in China is the major story of 2016” says Andrew Schmitt, Lead Analyst for Cignal AI. “We believe this growth will continue into 2017, though it will continue at a lower rate and will use different technologies and component vendors.”
“Outside of China, the 100G optical reboot is finally moving into the metro. Growth in metro WDM during the quarter outpaced long-haul WDM, as a multi-year cycle of spending in this area nears completion. New, higher capacity data center interconnect platforms from Cisco, Coriant, and Fujitsu are a major catalyst for this transition, as is the availability of speeds beyond 100G.”
Optical Hardware Report Highlights
- In North America, Ciena, Nokia, and ADVA all recorded positive YoY results. Cloud and Colo customers accounted for the gains.
- Huawei and Infinera were the only vendors with significantly positive YoY results in EMEA.
- Long Haul WDM spending in China was up a staggering 50% YoY, while domestic equipment vendors prepare new technologies and solutions for deployment in 2017.
- Ciena and Nokia shipped record numbers of 200G capable ports, mostly to Cloud and Colo customers. This segment accounted for nearly 20% of Ciena’s optical revenue.
