This report is the complete and final version of Cignal AI’s Optical Components Report for 1Q22. It includes:

  • Revenue market share results for companies selling Telecom, Datacom, Industrial, and Consumer optical components.
  • Detailed component unit shipments, including coherent and direct detect Telecom modules and 400GbE Datacom modules.
  • Forecasts for revenue and component unit shipments for 2022-2026.

Note that future versions of the Optical Components Report will cover additional telecom and datacom components, including additional datacenter optics, passive components, lasers, and more.

On June 30th, 2022 at 2 PM EST Cignal AI will give a live presentation of the Optical Components Report. Clients may register to attend by following the link below. A replay and downloadable presentation file will be available after the event.

Summary and Highlights

Revenue and Market Share Highlights

  • Supply chain difficulties continued to plague vendors, but bookings are breaking records, which is the same story as last quarter. Vendors are optimistic about a breakthrough in the supply chain this year, although none will make firm predictions. As a result, Cignal AI still forecasts growth in Datacom and Telecom bandwidth and spending in 2022 with a slight downturn in growth in 2023 for both segments due to inventory absorption.
  • Datacom component revenue was up over +15% this quarter, driven by hyperscale upgrades. Datacom optical components will be the largest driver of growth in the industry as hyperscale capex to upgrade and expand inside the datacenter continues to be the largest driver.
  • Telecom revenue, the segment most impacted by supply chain troubles, rose +15%, primarily due to growth in Gen60C (400Gbps pluggables).
  • Consumer revenue, mostly 3D sensing components for mobile devices, declined again in Q1, and on a rolling 4Q basis, but Q3 is the quarter that matters for this segment.
  • Industrial revenue growth declined slightly due to lower revenue at Coherent, which commands more than 40% of this market.

Optical Components Unit Shipments Highlights

Datacom Components

  • 400GbE shipments jumped back this quarter after a relatively lackluster Q4. Total 400GbE module shipments were up almost +90% YoY and over +60% QoQ.
  • A majority of modules shipped were DR, although that segment had the lowest growth.
  • Vendors report continued strong demand as hyperscalers upgrade networks from 100GbE to 400GbE.

Telecom Components

  • Total optical bandwidth growth for the quarter was buoyed by Gen60C (pluggable 400Gbps) shipments. Gen60C growth slowed some this quarter but is poised to pick up again next quarter and in the second half of the year.
  • 100Gbps coherent and direct detect shipments are both still in decline, but 100ZR remains a possibility, especially considering the recent DSP announcement from II-VI.
  • 200Gbps (Gen30) coherent is leveling off and will transition to Gen60 in China. (All Gen60 is counted under 400Gbps in this report).
  • 400Gbps embedded (Gen60P) shipments are still growing at a healthy rate.
  • 800Gbps (Gen90P) shipments declined sharply QoQ as the primary vendor (Ciena) experienced supply shortages.
