Optical hardware spending has been declining in North America since 2015. Deployed capacity, as measured through shipments of coherent ports, has not decreased over the past four years, so this spending decline may be a result of more efficient optical network designs or significant price erosion in optics. In this report, we examine the question of whether North America’s decline in overall optical spending signifies a long-term trend and whether EMEA and the rest of the world will follow this same trend.
