Compact Modular Optical Equipment Market Slows as Customers Evaluate 600G

Nearly Half a Million Coherent Ports Shipped in the Last 12 Months

BOSTON (September 18, 2019)Sales of Compact Modular platforms slowed during the second quarter of the year despite significant growth from market leader Ciena, as reported in the latest Optical Applications Report from market research firm Cignal AI. Production shipments of new 600Gbps platforms are taking longer to ramp as operators require more time to evaluate these next-generation solutions. As a result, Cignal AI has decreased the overall 2019 Compact Modular sales forecast for the year.

Customer Markets Report Released

The 2Q19 Optical Customer Markets Report shipped to clients on September 12th, including Excel and interactive data dashboards. There is a live presentation of the report scheduled for October 3rd.

The report examines optical shipments across four global regions to Incumbent, Wholesale, Cloud & Colo, Cable MSO & Broadband, Enterprise & Government customers, details vendor market share for equipment sales to each market, and provides forecasts by region and customer type.

Highlights this quarter:
  • Incumbent spending grew in every region as North America and CALA returned to growth. APAC growth for the quarter is enhanced by ZTE’s stoppage a year ago.
  • Cloud & colo spending growth slowed especially in North America, but Cloud & Colo remains the fastest-growing segment.
  • Cable & MSO sales declined due to a significant drop in North American sales.
